Roger Federer retires at 41

Roger Federer had announced his retirement last week itself, saying that his injuries were getting in the way. After all, he is a 41-year-old player. All through his post-match interview with Jim Courier, he was wiping away his tears. “I’ve done OK so far I feel — I’m at least able to talk. In my vision, I was never able to talk, so I’m doing way better.” Federer’s wife, Mirka Vavrinec, children, and parents were at the baseline of the audience. He thanked all of them.

Federer said, “As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries.” He continued, "I have worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body’s capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear. I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognize when it is time to end my competitive career."

After the match, Roger enjoyed the feeling before the crowd one last time and said, “It's been a wonderful day. I told the guys I'm happy, I'm not sad. It feels great to be here. I enjoyed tying my shoes one more time. Everything was the last time.”

Federer, along with Nadal and Novak Djokovic, make Team Europe one of the top teams in the entire world. All of them are the top three grand slam winners. Federer said, "It's been wonderful. And, of course, playing with Rafa on the same team and having the guys, everybody here, all of the legends … It is amazing. It really is.”

Continuing with the theme that this is not a sad day for him, Federer said, “It does feel like a celebration to me. I wanted it to feel like this at the end, and it’s exactly what I hoped for.”

Another one of his statements along the same lines, “It’s been so much fun. It’s been amazing. Thank you, everybody. I’ve had so many people cheer me on. And you guys here tonight, it means the world.”

Federer has been the number one player according to the Association of Tennis Professionals for a total of 310 weeks. He has 20 grand slam titles to his name, making him the top third player with the most number of them. His championships include eight Wimbledons, five U.S. Opens, six Australian Opens, and one French Open.
