Overwatch Doomfist

Currently, Overwatch Doomfist is a damage hero and his single-shot potential along with the explosive mobility makes him an imposing threat in the current game, however, now the developers are planning to take a stab, and genuinely try something new with this character.

As per the developers, transforming Doomfist into a tank will be a more appropriate option for Overwatch 2's brawler playstyle.

Overwatch 2 Doomfist Rework

On October 13, during an AMA session on Reddit, players enquired about the potential rework and role changing happening in Overwatch 2, and Geoff Goodman, the lead hero designer of Overwatch revealed some fascinating insights concerning changes being tried inside.

It was revealed that currently, no hero is having the role change officially and the reworks are simply being tried inside, yet the devs have effectively found out that Doomfist is simpler to adjust as a tank hero rather than DPS.

While talking about Doomfist rework, Goodman stated, "Doomfist’s kit is full of crowd control effects and mobility, which makes it difficult to tune and balance him as a DPS in OW2". He went on to say, "As a Tank though, he can keep those key properties to his kit since those can fit nicely into a Tank role (mostly the crowd control stuff)."

Overwatch 2 Doomfist abilities

Moreover, while talking about changing and balancing Doomfist abilities, Goodman revealed, "Of course this means he’ll be losing some damage and gaining some defenses." Doomfist's Seismic Slam into Rising Uppercut combo or Rocket Punch's ability to one-shot targets are currently available in the game that can be extremely irritating to manage.

Hence it is necessary to keep these features while adding new tank properties. Goodman further stated, "Some of the early feedback so far is that he’s not really feeling like a tank without having at least one active defensive button (his main defenses are passive atm), so that’s something we’ll probably try next."

Goodman did not reveal the precise changes and the new Doomfist abilities that will be added, yet, it's not difficult to assume that Doomfist will be utilizing his gauntlet as a shield of shorts to secure his teammates and will be getting a new ability as a tank hero.

Overwatch 2 Doomfist Rocket Punch changes

Other than revealing info about the addition of new Doomfist abilities, Goodman also talked about the quality that makes Doomfist a decent tank. As per the developer, Doomfist's high mobility to start a battle with his team is an interesting part of his gameplay.

Goodman stated, "One thing we’re testing is for Rocket Punch to create an area knockback around a target he impacts, creating a new ability to knock multiple enemies away (or into walls!),"

It was clear during the AMA session that the changes are in the early development phase, so there is quite some time before players get to see the new tank Doomfist, however, with developers ideas and plans being so clear, it is possible that Doomfist tank hero will be made accessible in the Overwatch 2 beta.
