By this point, Need for Speed has been around for over 30 years. Over the years, NFS has developed on many different identities and genres, spanning numerous platform generations. Heat, the most current game, was a throwback to the game's heyday in the early and mid-2000s.

Although Heat didn't quite hit the pinnacle of titles like Most Wanted, it may have been a positive step forward. The Need for Speed franchise, on the other hand, has been a bit dormant recently. Last year, a number of older titles were removed from digital marketplaces, aside from a canceled TV show.

But now that a new NFS game is in the works, there's reason to be optimistic. The new Need for Speed 2022 game would be the franchise's debut entry for Xbox One X and PlayStation 5, and it follows a string of poor to mediocre predecessors.

Many fans would be curious to know what route developer Criterion will take the next Need for Speed when it releases later this year and we have also received some additional details about Need For Speed 2022, including its map, gameplay, and features.

Need For Speed Heat was a little jump forward from Ghost Games, which was enough to get the franchise back on track. It was, however, Ghost Games' final Need For Speed game. Criterion Games, the same studio that offered us Need For Speed Hot Pursuit, is working on the next installment in the franchise, which is expected to be released this year.

Although no official announcements about Need For Speed 2022 has been released, leaks have suggested that Need for Speed 2022 has a massive map with a variety of different environments.

An insider has leaked a few pictures from the title, including the whole map of the game's planet, which appears to be quite large.

A large downtown area dubbed Lake Shore City is featured on the Need For Speed 2022 map. Moreover, the NFS 2022 map also includes a number of minor cities as well as numerous roads and highways that could be excellent for a variety of racing events.

Currently, it's unclear if the game will include offroad racing like Need For Speed Payback, but the map's large scale suggests a wide range of gameplay possibilities. The NFS 2022 map indeed looks good as it seems like the devs are planning to keep a similar layout, with urban areas to the east and rural areas to the west.

Aside from the map, the leak also included two in-game screenshots, possibly from Need For Speed 2022 gameplay, however, they aren't clear enough.

Other than the recent leaks, we received some other info from a known industry insider, Jeff Grubb on the elements that could be a part of the Need For Speed 2022 game.

Now, according to recent claims from Jeff Grubb, the next Need for Speed game will have attractive, anime-like graphics to give it a distinct aesthetic flair. Criterion intends to make it feel like a real metropolis, according to Grubb.

Furthermore, the title will have a photorealistic feel to it, but would still have some personality thanks to "anime features." "It'll be photo-realistic, but it'll have anime aspects on top of that," Grubb explained.

"You know when you see a car commercial or something like that and the car's driving around, but then cartoons flames and stuff are flying off it? That's the kind of the aesthetic that they seem to be going for."

Currently, the devs have not revealed the exact name of NFS 2022, what it'll be about, or if it'll have further unique features. The Need for Speed series seems to have a history of trying new methods to keep things fresh, such as Need for Speed: The Run, a cinematic action game including moments in which the player gets out of the car.

Aside from the visuals, car lovers will be pleased to learn that automobile customization will be returning in this year's game, according to Grubb.

These were the complete details of the NFS 2022 game, and if leaks are true then players will not have to wait for long as leaks and reports eventually lead to a formal announcement.
