Sonic Frontiers has been officially announced by SEGA

Sonic Frontiers is probably going to be the name of the next Sonic game as per a recent trademark filed by SEGA.

Sonic Frontiers Confirmed

Sonic Frontiers, the new Sonic game has been officially announced by Sega that will be released on different platforms like Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch, and PC.

While revealing the new Sonic game, Sonic Frontiers, Sega revealed a new Sonic Frontiers cinematic trailer, affirming that somewhere in holiday 2022, Sonic Frontiers' release date will be scheduled.

The trailer shows the scale of the game's world, "This Holiday 2022 - Journey into new realms in Sonic Frontiers."

As per the official description given under the trailer, Sonic Frontiers is, "an experience like never before, accelerate to new heights and experience the thrill of high-velocity open-zone freedom."

Players will get to "Battle powerful enemies as you speed through the Starfall Islands – landscapes brimming with dense forests, overflowing waterfalls, sizzling deserts, and more."

Sonic Frontiers Trademark

Now SEGA has filed a trademark for 'Sonic Frontiers', which seems like the name of the next mainline section in its lead series. 

A listing on the country’s trademark body was found recently, and it revealed that the Japanese trademark for Sonic Frontiers was documented before the end of last month.

Other than this, another Japanese Twitter user, shared screenshots of the trademarks that were filed by SEGA and it included  "Sonic Frontiers", "Sonic Frontier", "Hero of light and darkness" and "Shining Force" in Japan.

However, what is to be noticed is that the brand name was trademarked after online rumors started to make rounds that the next section in the Sonic series would be known as Sonic Frontiers.

On October 17, a few days before SEGA filed the trademark for "Sonic Frontiers", an unknown leaker guaranteed that the name of the upcoming Sonic games had been changed to Sonic Frontiers as earlier the metadata referring to documents utilized in the development of Sega's teaser trailer, proposed that the new title in the series could be called 'Sonic Rangers'. 

It was additionally claimed that the next Sonic game will feature an open-world setup, and with one part of the leak being confirmed, it seems like the second half would be true as well.

Sonic Frontiers certainly sounds promising, and the "frontiers" part certainly suggests that something very interesting could be coming for the series, however, it would be best to wait until SEGA chooses to reveal more info, as nothing has been revealed officially till now.
