PlayStation's Game Pass service - Project Spartacus leak

Usually, Sony's free PlayStation Plus games get all the attention from the users yet the PS Now also offers significant value for PS4 and PS5 gamers. A set of new games gets added to the PlayStation Now service each month and then Sony rarely removes any game from it.

However, Sony is planning to launch a new service similar to Xbox Game Pass that will probably offer more extensive gaming titles as compared to both PlayStation Now and PlayStation Plus games.

Xbox Game Pass was introduced by Microsoft long ago, and the organization has been very clear with its idea and ambition to develop the Xbox Game Pass library by adding new titles to the subscription service every now and then.

Now the service offers a lot of value and convenience to its users which has led it to become one of the most popular gaming services used by gamers around the globe.

Clearly, the gaming industry is filled with competition and each company wants to do better than the other, be it with new games or the service offering these games, which seems to be the case with Sony. Sony is planning to launch its own Game Pass service for PS5, currently known as - Project Spartacus.

Sony's Project Spartacus

Sony's Project Spartacus is its new venture towards the Game Pass service which will probably show up on both PS4 and PS5, however, chances of it showing up exclusively on PS5 is higher.

PlayStation's Project Spartacus will probably bring some comparative elements of Xbox Game Pass, like the monthly subscription that offers a list of games to its users through their PS4 and PS5 consoles, and obviously, players will need to download in order to play them.

However, one major question that the fans might have in their mind now is "will PlayStation Spartacus service replace PS Plus?"

Well as an answer to that, there's no official announcement from Sony but it has been hypothesized that Sony might want to include the PS Plus as a component of its elements in Spartacus, just like Xbox did with its Xbox Live memberships, which was later on included in the features of Xbox Game Pass.

It is likewise possible that Project Spartacus will give access to the complete PlayStation Library to all the users who have its membership as currently the users who have active PS Plus membership and the owner of the PS5 console are already enabled to access the PlayStation Library.

Since the PS Plus membership offers a series of PS4 games that can be enhanced for PS5 and can be downloaded anytime, therefore getting similar features or even better in the Project Spartacus service is highly likely.

PlayStation Spartacus service price

Sony has not made any revelation on their plans for the Game Pass Service, however, the news of Sony working on the Game Pass service came from a Bloomberg report where it was mentioned that the project has been codenamed "Spartacus".

Now as mentioned above, without any confirmation anything here is pure speculation, yet it is a given fact that if Sony will launch its own Game Pass then it would rival Microsoft's. Currently, Microsoft's Xbox Game Pass service costs $14.99 a month, whereas Sony's PS Plus service costs $60 a year, so getting the PlayStation Game Pass service somewhere within this range is a possibility.

We can expect the PlayStation Game Pass service to come at different levels of the price in which the higher tier might offer PS Now while others might preclude this from the group.

PlayStation Game Pass service release date

Sony has an interesting lineup of games planned for the year 2022, so at the earliest, we can get the PlayStation Spartacus service in 2022.

Different PlayStation exclusives such as HogwartsLegacy, God of War: Ragnarok, Gran Turismo 7, etc are anticipated for the 2022 launch, so getting them on a service completely made for these games would definitely be exciting for the gamers.

However, we have no official statement from Sony, so the expected PlayStation Game Pass service release date is also speculation for now.

Yet Sony is definitely working on the service hidden away from the public eye, thus getting the service in 2022, or maybe even earlier wouldn't shock anyone. And the report claimed, "When it launches, expected in the spring, the service will merge Sony’s two existing subscription plans, PlayStation Plus and PlayStation Now."

PlayStation Spartacus features

As mentioned in the Bloomberg report, "The service, code-named Spartacus, will allow PlayStation owners to pay a monthly fee for access to a catalog of modern and classic games."

These modern and classic games include the large variety of games offered on the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5 consoles. Moreover, it is expected that Project Spartacus will incorporate most of the PlayStation exclusive features along with a variety of other third-party titles.

In addition to giving access to games from PS3, PS2, and PS1 consoles, the service could likewise incorporate a few free monthly games that are offered on the PS Plus service

It was reported that the "PlayStation Game Pass service will come in three tiers", and these tiers include:

  • Tier 1: Existing PlayStation Plus benefits.
  • Tier 2: A large catalog of PlayStation 4 and, eventually, PlayStation 5 games.
  • Tier 3: Extended demos, game streaming, and a library of classic PS1, PS2, PS3, and PSP games.

It is likewise hinted that Sony is planning to keep the PlayStation Plus branding as it is but will remove the PlayStation Now service and merge it with the new service. Moreover, Sony has already started pulling PS Now cards from a few UK retailers, which is suggestive of the new changes coming soon.

Well this was everything that has been revealed so far about the new Game Pass service that Sony is planning for its fans, yet it has not been affirmed by the officials, so it is better to take this information with a grain of salt.

We expect Sony to announce their plans on PlayStation Game Pass service soon as it would be a wonderful announcement for PlayStation gamers to get their favorite games all in one place.
