Starbreeze states in an announcement post that Project Baxter—which is most likely not the game's ultimate name—will launch in 2026, which is still a long way off. That year, the game would be released on "all major platforms" and powered by Unreal Engine 5, the same engine that powers titles like Metal Gear Solid: Snake Eater and Project M from NCSoft.

Handling both development and publishing, Starbreeze promises Project Baxter will "carry the signature Starbreeze game cornerstones". Among these include a strong focus on developing live services, a basic dedication to cooperative multiplayer, "community engagement," and a "larger than life experience." Moreover, the game will also support crossplay across various platforms.

As per the company's statement, Project Baxter would "carry the signature Starbreeze game cornerstones of co-operative multiplayer, lifetime commitment through a Games as a Service-model, community engagement and a larger than life experience."

According to Starbreeze CEO Tobias Sjögren, the emphasis on "community-driven experiences, 'play it your way', and infinite replayability" is why his studio and Dungeons & Dragons are a strong match. He expressed gratitude to Wizards of the Coast for their collaboration, stating that they've always eyed Dungeons & Dragons as an ideal IP for their future ventures.

He said, "When looking at prospective IPs for our future projects, Dungeons & Dragons was always at the top of our list and I’m incredibly happy to announce this license. I want to thank Wizards of the Coast for being such a great partner. Development of the game is in full swing, and we are excited to deliver an amazing Dungeons & Dragons action-adventure in 2026."

Eugene Evans, senior VP of digital strategy and licensing at Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, also shared excitement about this collaboration. He expressed confidence in Starbreeze's passion and gaming expertise, expecting them to create an experience that resonates with fans worldwide.

Evans said, “Dungeons and Dragons is having an extraordinary year. Our gaming brands, including Dungeons & Dragons, continue to attract great partners as we execute our plan to grow our digital games portfolio through licensing and development. Our collaboration with Starbreeze is a prime illustration of this strategy. Given their impressive games and passion for Dungeons & Dragons, we are confident that they will create an experience that will delight fans worldwide.”
